This is The Wire's Karan Thapar's father and uncle of Romila Thapar. Gen Pran Nath Thapar. He was made Army chief by Nehru because Nehru wanted someone he could trust "to do the job". Nehru only trusted relatives. Legendary Gen. Cariappa wanted to make Gen Thorat army chief. Thorat had experience with China border & was in favor of deploying army in forward positions. Nehru overruled Cariappa and made Thapar army chief. Thapar had no experience with China border, but he was related to Nehru. Gen Thorat retired on being superseded. As planned Thapar lost 40000 sq km land to China in 1962, then pretended to resign. Nehru immediately sent him abroad as Ambassador to enjoy life with our money. Thousands of Indian soldiers died.
